Mystic Mbira Music is a mbira duo formed by master mbira player Chartwell Dutiro & Jori Buchel.
Chartwell Dutiro is a Zimbabwean musician, singer, songwriter, composer, author and teacher. Chartwell Dutiro is a maverick master mbira player with a story that begins in the sacred musical rituals in his home village. From 1986 to 1994 he joined, recorded and toured the world with the legendary ‘Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited’. Since 1994, Chartwell has been based in England performing, recording, teaching and building bridges between cultures through his music. He has played the Shona mbira virtually his entire life and his more recent career as a solo artist, band leader in the UK and collaborative musician. Chartwell has cut a remarkable path through African music.
Jori Buchel is a seasoned musician, mbira player and singer from the Netherlands. She grew up playing the classical violin in a variety of orchestras. Jori first heard the sound of the mbira in 2007 while she was studying Cultural Musicology at the University of Amsterdam. Immediately enchanted by the sound, she started playing mbira at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In 2018 Jori performed at the Afrika Festival Hertme (Netherlands) and Southburgh Festival (Norfolk, UK) with Chartwell Dutiro & Spirit Talk Mbira. She also performed at Journeys Festival Leicester with Mbira Sisters.
